Proven Success
There’s no event in the country that prepares teams for success at the state and national level better than the Empire. No matter how thorough the workshop, rigorous the practice or realistic the scrimmage, there’s no substitute for in-round trial experience: that is exactly what the Empire provides. Students face off against some of the world’s top mock trial teams in four rounds of intense competition.
EMTA measures the success of the Invitational by looking at the success of our previous participants. At last year’s Empire, we hosted 25 American teams. After competing at the Empire, here’s how they fared in 2011:
- 7 won state championships, advancing to the National High School Mock Trial Championship (“NHSMTC”)
- 4 placed in the top 10 at the NHSMTC (including our Empire World Champion and Runner-up
- 14 placed in the top 5 of their state competition
- In both Connecticut and Pennsylvania, the state championship round was a battle of two former Empire participants
That success is no coincidence. Students benefit from spending the summer and early fall months analyzing a highly advanced case (a former collegiate fact pattern) and from the diverse trial advocacy styles and techniques encountered in the courtroom. Mistakes normally made at the regional or state competition are made months prior at the Empire. By the time the “regular season” comes along, teams are ready for success.
